Rob Zombie’s The Lords of Salem entwines past and present for a great and musically-driven mix of horror and psychological thriller.

Lords of Salem was released in 2013 and directed and created by horror guru, Rob Zombie. This film mends the past with the present through witchcraft. Lords of Salem begins during the 17th century Salem Witch Trials. The striking imagery introduced sets the nightmarish tone for the duration of the film.  The witchy overtones quickly extend into present day Salem, Massachusetts through Heidi Hawthorne, the film’s protagonist, who is played by Sheri Moon Zombie. Heidi is plagued with the demons of the past by being thrown into a hypnotic trance each time a mysterious record is played. This record is an album by “The Lords” and was delivered to Heidi in a wooden box, and ultimately represents the demonic witches of the past, the lords of Salem. As the record is played more and more, Heidi experiences violent flashbacks of the town’s horrifying past. Being a recovering drug addict, Heidi has a difficult time determining if her flashbacks are the old witches seeking revenge or delusions from her destructive habits.

Although the plot of this film is simple, it still is a twisted and truly horrifying creation by displaying disturbing situations of the past and present. The mending of past and present Salem is done seamlessly. Sheri Moon Zombie’s performance is also one to not forget. She truly becomes Heidi and shows the physical combining of past and present Salem. One of the most memorable parts of the movie is when Heidi realizes what is truly happening with the witches of the past because the plot completely unfolds and becomes even more terrifying.  Overall, this film is perfect for anyone looking to get into the Halloween spirit.
