Lady Monarch Softball Prepares for Showdown with Wilkes
As we are at the midway point of the softball season, the King’s Lady Monarchs sit at 16-2 overall, with a perfect 4-0 record in Freedom Conference play. On Thursday afternoon at the Betzler Athletic Complex, the Lady Monarchs will welcome cross-town rival Wilkes University for a doubleheader. The Lady Colonels come into the doubleheader with a 7-11 overall record and a 0-2 record in conference play.
The Lady Monarchs come into play with an 11 game winning streak having just completed a doubleheader sweep of Oneonta State on Tuesday. Wilkes comes in after being swept to Lycoming College in a doubleheader in Williamsport on Wednesday. The Lady Monarchs completed the sweep of the Lady Colonels on Wilkes’ home field last season, winning the two games in convincing fashion, 11-0 and 10-1 respectively.
Junior catcher Amanda Cardone leads the Lady Monarchs offense with a team-high .520 batting average. Cardone also has three home runs, nine doubles and 19 RBI. Fellow junior shortstop Jenn Harnischfeger follows with a .500 average with one home run, three doubles, two triples, 12 RBI and 15 stolen bases.
Three first-years have also put up big offensive numbers for the Lady Monarchs. First baseman Amy Kowalczyk is hitting .380 with two doubles and 10 RBI while outfielder Katie Kowalski is hitting .373 with four home runs and 13 RBI. Rounding out the trio of first-years is Maggie Gola. The designated hitter is arguably the Lady Monarchs most productive clutch hitter posting a .370 average with eight home runs and 28 RBI. All three are primed for their first matchups with Wilkes.
On the mound junior Brittany Haight has had a tremendous season posting a 4-0 record with an earned run average of 0.85. She also has two saves and 27 strikeouts. Fellow junior Karissa Kross also has posted a 4-0 record with a 1.67 ERA and 23 strikeouts. Senior Annie Erndl has struggled at times posting a 5.04 ERA but does have a winning record at 3-2.
On the Wilkes side, sophomore outfielder Emily McGrath leads the team with a .427 average with one home run, two doubles and six RBI. Junior Kait Brown follows with a .387 average with six RBI. Fellow junior catcher Jordan Borger has a .357 batting average with four doubles and nine RBI. Jessalyn Paveletz is the lone senior on the Lady Colonels roster and is hitting .327 with two home runs, two doubles and nine RBI.
Pitching wise the Lady Colonels are led by the threesome of first year Brook Chapin, junior Alysha Bixler, and sophomore Laykin Hughes. Chapin has posted a 1-3 record with a 3.10 ERA. Bixler is 3-0 with a 4.20 ERA and 15 strikeouts while Hughes has struggled, going 1-5 with a 5.44 ERA with 28 strikeouts.
On paper this may look like a mismatch but it’s still a heated rivalry and the Lady Monarchs can certainly expect the best from the Lady Colonels. The action begins at 3 p.m.
